Weaving wool into scholarships

One of life’s lessons is that opportunity often doesn’t make an appointment before it arrives. That truism was illustrated again last spring, when apparel merchandising cialis for daily use double dose associate professor Nancy Lyons stepped into her aesthetics class and told the students that they would be submitting designs for new wool products being created for SDSU. Lyons had not included the project into her viagra 2014 syllabus when she was planning the class, which covers the principles of design in a wide range of disciplines. However, the SDSU Signature Wool Project was suddenly ready to go and designs were needed. Also, Lyons has worked in the design field, both with theater costumes and in fashions. She also teaches the department’s apparel design course, where students would be more properly prepared for the experience, but it wouldn’t be taught for another year. So Lyons applied another life lesson—be flexible—and added the project to aesthetics. It didn’t take long for the students to find beauty in woolen scarves and blankets, which are now being sold on campus. After a review of the submissions, designs by Lyons and students Kate Doom and Sydnie Bertrand were selected. The final products provide a warm and fashionable way to show SDSU spirit while the proceeds will eventually provide scholarships for students in the Colleges of Education and Human Sciences and Agriculture and Biological Sciences. The scarves and blankets were unveiled at the Sept. 27, 2013, meeting of the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association. Creating a winning design Doom, now a junior, said that after getting the assignment last spring, “I grabbed one online viagra yellow and one blue colored pencil and began drawing up a few blanket sketches. logos, SDSU colors, and patterns until I was finally satisfied with the overall design.” Those reviewing the submissions were impressed with her work as well. Doom designed a queen-sized blanket using heather blue with dark SDSU blue and dark SDSU yellow stripes on each end. Lyons designed a stadium blanket that is a unique SDSU blue and yellow plaid. Bertrand designed scarves in SDSU light blue with light yellow stripes and vice versa. “The whole process has been an amazing experience,” said Doom, an apparel merchandising major from Marshall, Minn. Jane Hegland, head of the department of consumer sciences, reviewed the designs with two representatives from the sheep growers association and also was part of the January planning meeting with the sheep grower representatives and SDSU Deans Barry Dunn (ag/bio) and Jill Thorngren (ed/human sciences). strength of each product designed, along with a willingness to work with us to strengthen the aesthetic appeal.” Employing marketing in design Bertrand said before creating her design, she first analyzed the market in which it would be sold. “My main concern was that both men and women would be purchasing the design, so it needed to please each gender. I chose the stripe because it is something worn easily by men and women,” said Bertrand, an apparel merchandising major from Sioux Falls. She added, “I also wanted my design to stand out somehow, so rather than doing the traditional royal blue and golden yellow, I toned down the colors by using more of a pastel palette. To finish off the design, I used a basic fringe on the two ends.” Both Bertrand and Doom said they were surprised and excited to have their designs selected. Doom said, “Disbelief was my first reaction when I found out that my blanket had been chosen. I did not seriously think that my design had been chosen. Then I was very excited and proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to tell my family. I am so thankful that I was able to contribute to this exciting process of the first SDSU Signature Wool Project.” The proprietary designs will be used only for these products, according to Patty DeZeeuw with the sheep growers. Almost all of the wool for the 500-600 scarves, 300 to 400 stadium blankets and 150 to 200 queen-sized blankets came from South Dakota producers, DeZeeuw said. Larry Prager of Center of the

The wool then had viagracanadianpharmacy-norx.com to be shipped to San Angelo, Texas, for scouring and to Faribault, Minn., for the processing. IMPACT 2018, the university’s strategic plan, calls for colleges to increase their scholarship funds. “This is an effort to fulfill that mission,” Dunn said. “Although products are priced very modestly, we will generate scholarships for next year.” While there are initial costs, “once we get it rolling, the proceeds will be considerable,” Dunn said. Thorngren added, “In addition to fulfilling the goal of increasing our scholarship funds, this is a terrific opportunity to enhance another strategic goal—strengthening partnerships
