Master of education courses go online

It’s one of the ironies of education that it can be tough for teachers to get access to advanced degrees. That’s not the case anymore, however, as two master of education courses have gone online. “Most of our students are full-time employees,” says Associate Professor Kenneth Rasmussen. “They’re moms and dads. They’re lives are very, very full.” In December 2010, teachers who wanted more education got a boost when the South Dakota Board of Regents approved going online with master of education degrees in educational administration and curriculum and instruction. Rasmussen explains that prior to the regents’ approval to offer the degrees online, many of the courses had already been offered over the Internet. Still, a mix of online and in-class offerings for master’s degree students proved be tough on those who didn’t live close to campus. “If students live more than sixty or seventy miles from campus, it becomes prohibitive,” Rasmussen says.

Degrees target future principals, master teachers

Both degrees offer a variety of specializations. The educational administration degree is for teachers who want to be certified as principals. Secondary and elementary specializations meet the requirements for endorsement as a principal in South Dakota. There’s also an adult education specialization. Rasmussen likens the students who earn the curriculum and instruction degree to master teachers or master educators. They may work in curriculum, current issues, diversity, educational psychology, or research and writing. Students earning the curriculum and instruction degree may choose from five specializations: elementary, secondary, adult and higher education, career technical education, and an endorsement in English as a canadian pharmacy meds new language. The curriculum and instruction degree averages fifty students while the educational administration degree averages between seventy and eighty students. It’s tough to gauge the number of students working on that degree because some of those students are also taking teaching certificate renewal courses.

Online students don’t fit in mold

Rasmussen doesn’t have a profile for the kinds of professionals who decide they need a master of education degree. Students come from natural viagra pills

Rasmussen says students are likely to decide on earning an advanced degree when “they see what leadership means.” Even when teachers are the students, there are some adaptations that have to be made for pursuing an entire degree online. “There is some adjustment,” Rasmussen says, “time management being the biggest one.”

on track, while online offerings have led to what Rasmussen describes as “time shifting” that allows students to work on their courses at 5 a.m., 11 p.m., Saturday, or Sunday. That freedom may hamper their ability to stay on task. In an online course he teaches, Rasmussen offers a to do list to keep students focused as well as a look ahead at what’s coming up in the class. “That helps students

While teaching online, Rasmussen notes that professors can cite from online journals, the Web sites of major newspapers, or the conference reports of professional organizations. “It opens a vaster amount of resources for instructors,” Rasmussen says.
